Before joining HARP, Michael spent ten years working as a black cab driver. While he valued the experience, he knew he wanted something different, a role where he could make a tangible difference to people’s lives. He found that at HARP.
Michael now works at Heath House, supporting people who have come directly from the streets.
“When people arrive, they’re exhausted and worn down. But within days you can see a real change. Better sleep, proper meals, a bit of breathing space. The trust takes longer to build.”
Skills that transfer
The skills Michael developed during his time as a cab driver have proved unexpectedly valuable in his current role.
“Patience, organisation, knowing how to read people… it turns out that’s exactly what this job needs.”
Starting something new came with its challenges. Michael admits he was initially nervous about certain aspects of the role, particularly IT, but found strong support from his colleagues.
“The team around me made the difference. They’ve supported me in getting up to speed in the same way we support the people who come through our doors.”
Understanding the reality of homelessness
Through his work, Michael has seen first-hand how quickly circumstances can change.
“You meet all sorts of people here. It really is true, most people are only one step away from losing their home. A relationship breakdown, a job loss… it can take anyone down a difficult path.”
Building trust takes time, but for Michael, it’s one of the most meaningful parts of the job.
“It takes time for people to trust again. But when they do, that’s the rewarding part.”
For anyone considering a similar path, Michael is clear in his advice:
“If you don’t want a 9-to-5 and you want to help people, this is worth considering. It’s rewarding, and no two days are the same.”
